About the Department
The Department of Radiology Technologies was established pursuant to Administrative Order No. (21890) issued by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research in 2018, coinciding with the establishment of the University. Study in the Department of Radiology Technologies at the Faculty of Health and Medical Technologies, Al-Zahraa University for Women, commenced in the 2019–2020 academic year. The Department offers a comprehensive Bachelor’s degree programme in Radiology Technologies.
The Department has distinguished infrastructure, including modern classrooms designed to accommodate contemporary teaching methods adopted internationally. It also has highly modern, fully equipped specialised laboratories covering various areas of specialisation and furnished with state-of-the-art equipment from reputable international manufacturers directly relevant to the field of Radiology Technologies.
In addition, the Department has cooperation agreements with specialised hospitals and medical centres related to radiology and medical imaging in its various forms, across both the public and private sectors, including specialised hospitals and medical centres affiliated with Imam Hussein Holy Shrine. These agreements enable students to undertake fieldwork, enhance their practical experience and skills, and gain first-hand knowledge of matters related to their specialisations and the working environment.
The Department also has a specialised and qualified teaching staff, including holders of Master’s and doctoral degrees, some of whom have obtained higher degrees from prestigious international universities. This responds to the pressing need for specialists in Radiology Technologies in Karbala Governorate, particularly across the majority of the Middle Euphrates governorates and Iraq as a whole.

The Department aspires to become a leading institution in the field of radiology technical education at the local, regional, and international levels, in both academic and professional domains. It seeks to produce distinguished graduates, both theoretically and practically, by providing high-quality academic programmes in the field of radiology. It also aspires to enhance the level of healthcare services required to meet the needs of the labour market and advance scientific research in our beloved country.

The Department is committed to educating, training, and graduating highly competent medical imaging professionals who are scientifically and professionally qualified and capable of operating complex and advanced radiological imaging technologies. They are equipped to apply the knowledge and expertise they have acquired in the field of medical imaging to serve the community and the country.

It is a technical medical specialty aimed at preparing qualified graduates to operate various types of medical imaging equipment. Students study scientific and anatomical subjects, including:Radiation physics and radiation protection.Medical anatomy and radiographic anatomy.Medical imaging techniques (X-Ray, CT-Scan, MRI, and Ultrasound).
Study in medical technical colleges (both public and private) lasts for 4 academic years, after which the graduate receives a Bachelor’s degree.
The official job title upon employment in healthcare institutions is (Medical Technologist / Radiology and Sonography)
Important Note: According to the effective laws in Iraq (Medical and Health Grading Law No. 6 of 2000), this department is included under central appointment within the Ministry of Health. However, actual employment always depends on the state general budget and the ministry's needs in the graduation year.
Graduates can work in both the public (government) and private sectors in the following areas:Ministry of Health hospitals and emergency centers.Specialized radiology and sonography centers.CT-Scan and MRI units.Oncology and cancer treatment centers (Radiotherapy).
